Acne Causes Image - The Dermatology ClinicDiet and hygiene are common causes of acne, but these are far from the only culprits. Several factors can cause unsightly blemishes and even major breakouts, especially in adults. Adults tend to suffer from acne in the lower half of the face, and though blemishes may look like the same attention-grabbing marks from teenage years and cause that same self-conscious feeling, adult breakouts are different. Some breakouts even have uncommon or unexpected causes.

1. Hair Removal

Waxing, plucking, and shaving all irritate the skin and cause the skin to swell, which can push dirt and bacteria into the pores. Try to clean the area thoroughly before and after hair removal to prevent an outbreak.

2. Hormones

While it is no secret that hormones are the leading contributor of teenage acne, it may be surprising to learn that adults, especially women, often experience breakouts because of hormone changes. Pre- and post-menopausal women can experience increased levels of blemishes on the skin due to the hormone imbalances in the body, which tells oil glands to work overtime.

3. Traveling

One of the lesser known acne causes is one that already causes frustration for so many other reasons- air travel. With an average cruising altitude of 36,000 feet, commercial airplane cabins have low humidity levels. Airline passengers can experience dehydration because of this altitude. Like hormones, dehydration also makes the skin look for ways to lubricate itself. Glands naturally increase oil production, possibly leading to pimples and blemishes. To keep glands in check, stay hydrated while traveling.

Adult breakouts are common; they can also be prevented or treated. An adult needs to keep their skin clean and hydrated, maintain a healthy diet, and keep an eye on daily vitamin intake. All of these can keep skin blemish free and youthful for years to come.
