Dermaplaning 101: What to Know About This Treatment

By June 18, 2019May 11th, 2023Skin Care

Dermaplaning is a popular dermatological procedure among celebrities these days and for good reason. Unwanted hair and dull skin on the face can be annoying, especially in pictures and under makeup. Dermaplaning can provide beautiful results without any downtime.

What Are the Dermaplaning Process and Recovery Like?

Dermaplaning is a minimally abrasive exfoliation method used to remove dead skin and unsightly peach fuzz on the face to help produce a smooth, soft glow. During the process, which lasts approximately 30 minutes, an aesthetician holds a surgical scalpel at a 45-degree angle and gently moves it in short, quick strokes across the face to help reveal healthier, more supple skin. The sensation is similar to shaving and shouldn’t cause any pain or discomfort.

What Are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

In addition to a brightened complexion, dermaplaning can provide long-lasting results. It removes dead skin and can leave the face radiant for an average of three weeks. It doesn’t involve the use of harsh chemicals or anesthesia, so it’s safe for women who are pregnant or nursing. With the exception of skin affected by cystic acne, it’s recommended for all skin types, and there is no healing time or recovery period. Skin may appear a bit pink and will be very sensitive to the sun, so it’s important to wear sunscreen. Otherwise, work and other activities can be resumed immediately.

Where Can I Have Dermaplaning Done?

While the dermaplaning process is fast and simple, it should only be performed by a licensed aesthetician or board-certified dermatologist. Facial skin is sensitive, and the equipment used for the procedure is extremely sharp. Trusting a professional who’s experienced in dermaplaning is the only way to ensure safety and accuracy.
