Beach vacations are a summer staple, but a long day in the sun and sand can wreak havoc on your skin. In fact, the reflection of the sun off the ocean makes sun damage even more likely than in other locales. Knowing how to take care of your skin at the beach is an essential part of summer skincare. Try these strategies to protect your skin when spending time outdoors in the heat.

1. Protect Your Lips

The sensitive skin on your lips is vulnerable to the sun’s rays. To counteract this effect, choose a moisturizing lip balm with at least SPF 18.

2. Prioritize Hydration

Because the sun and sand can be drying, a rich moisturizing cream is a beach bag must-have. For summer skincare, choose a hypoallergenic product to counteract increased sensitivity caused by the sun. In addition, drinking plenty of water helps ensure your skin and hair get enough moisture.

3. Strategize Sunscreen Application

Choose a sunscreen product with at least SPF 30 and make sure to apply it correctly. That means putting it on at least 30 minutes before you’re exposed to the sun and reapplying every two hours, or more often if you take a dip. Don’t forget areas like the tops of the feet, the ears, the hairline, lips, and eyelids.

4. Stay Covered Up

Clothing should be used as an additional layer of protection against the sun’s rays. At a minimum, you should plan to wear a loose, long-sleeved cover-up, sunglasses, and a straw hat. Sit under an umbrella or shaded area when outdoors rather than directly in the sun.

5. Follow Up With a Facial

Once you return from your beach vacation, it’s important to clear your complexion of sunscreen, dead skin cells, and other pore-clogging remnants from the trip. Schedule a deep cleanse with a moisturizing mask of coconut or jojoba oil for a fresh face.
