How Retinol Works to Help Reverse Signs of Aging

If you’re concerned about the effects of aging on your skin, you’ve likely considered retinol. This treatment is shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lighten age spots, and create a smoother, firmer profile.

What Is Retinol?

Retinol is a skin care product that is derived from vitamin A. It plays an essential role in the growth of new skin cells. It’s also an antioxidant, a compound that helps cells differentiate and produce strong structural components—both important aspects of young, healthy cells that can be affected by the aging process.

How Does Retinol Work?

Retinol contains compounds called retinoids that promote the rapid regeneration of skin cells. Through the exfoliating effects of retinol, the surface skin cells quickly die off to make way for the growth of new cells. This product can help smooth fine lines, even irregular skin tone caused by sun exposure, and aid as a supplement to severe acne treatment. Retinol products also help prevent the breakdown of collagen, a substance that helps keep the skin smooth and firm but naturally decreases with age.

Prescription vs. Non-Prescription Retinol

Retinol cream prescribed by a dermatologist is up to 100 times stronger than most of the over-the-counter variety. Patients who have never used retinol may prefer to build up to a prescription strength slowly. Prescription retinoid products can create noticeably smoother, more even-toned skin in as early as six weeks with daily use. You can view our selection of retinol creams in our online shop.

Are There Side Effects?

While retinol is safe to use, you should avoid sun exposure by wearing sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Because retinol works to reverse the effects of sun damage, exposure to UV rays can make the treatment less effective.
