Timeline of How Your Skin and Face Change as You Age

We’ve been providing quality skincare since 1947. If there has been one constant in those seventy years, it’s that people want healthier, younger-looking skin. While none of us can avoid the effects of time, a professionally designed skincare regimen combined with a treatment from a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at The Dermatology Clinic can help rejuvenate tired skin.

What Happens to Your Skin as You Age?

Not everyone’s skin ages in the same way or at the same pace. Just as some people go bald in their 20s, some people show signs of aging earlier than others. In general, people don’t exhibit notable effects of aging until their 30s, when elastin and collagen production starts to slow. You may begin to notice crow’s feet and laugh lines around this time. In your 40s, wrinkles become more pronounced, and a furrowed brow may develop. By the time you reach your 50s and beyond, the production of natural moisturizing oils slows, leaving skin drier. Elastin production slows further, and gravity begins to take effect, giving the skin a sagging look. If you haven’t taken care with protection from sun and weather damage, sunspots may also become prominent. The older you get, the less quickly skin cells reproduce, meaning skin gets thinner and becomes drier and less elastic.

What Can Be Done to Slow the Effects of Aging?

The best way to prevent the most noticeable effects of aging is to care for your skin when you’re young. Regular use of moisturizers and diligent sun protection will go a long way. In fact, a study published by the Skin Cancer Foundation found that daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher can help reduce aging of the skin caused by the sun. Later in life, treatments from a cosmetic dermatologist, like Botox, can reduce muscle function and thus prevent creasing that leads to wrinkles. Sunspots and other blemishes can be eliminated with laser treatments, such as BBL and Profractional. We can work closely with you to find a skin regimen that works to help preserve youthful skin.
