We all have a part of our routine that’s dedicated to helping us look our best, whether it’s using a special night cream before bed, going for a run, or not eating out on the weekdays. But even with a healthy diet and rigorous workout routine, sometimes there are still a few problem areas that you just can’t get rid of. If you’re struggling with a few stubborn pockets of fat, CoolSculpting® might be able to help.
CoolSculpting is an advanced treatment that was developed during a collaboration between scientists at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital. It’s a noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment that can target and remove pockets of fat on your stomach, thighs, hips, and other parts of your body. CoolSculpting freezes fat cells to help give you a tighter, more toned figure without little to no downtime.
CoolSculpting uses a process called cryolipolysis, or fat freezing. Fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than other tissues in the body, meaning they can be targeted safely and easily. After being frozen, the frozen fat cells will be broken down and processed by your body during the weeks and months after your treatment. CoolSculpting doesn’t prevent new fat cells from developing, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise is essential. Also, this procedure is not intended to promote significant weight loss. It’s designed to treat small problem areas.
In practice, CoolSculpting procedures are fairly simple. Your provider will assess the size of the areas you would like treated as well as the amount of excess skin. Then, a gel pad will be placed on the skin for protection and to create a smooth surface to make treatment easier. Then, your provider will use an applicator to provide suction and freeze fat cells in the desired area. Though the length of treatment depends on the size and number of the areas you’re targeting, CoolSculpting procedures generally take about an hour to complete. During treatment, you can read a book, catch up on work, use your phone, or even take a nap.
As mentioned earlier, CoolSculpting is meant to target pockets of fat on the body. It will not help patients lose significant amounts of weight or tighten saggy skin. CoolSculpting can help with excess abdominal fat, reduce the appearance of love handles, minimize double chins, and more. Patients generally lose about 20-25% of the fat in the areas they treat.
Because CoolSculpting targets small areas of fat, the best candidates for this treatment are healthy adults who are within 20 pounds of their ideal body weight but have a few problem areas that they’d like some help with. However, there still needs to be enough fat for the applicator to hold on to. Patients who are already in exceptionally good shape may not be able to use CoolSculpting treatments as intended. Also, like many other cosmetic treatments, CoolSculpting is not recommended for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
Because CoolSculpting is a noninvasive procedure, patients should be able to resume their normal activities as soon as their treatment is complete. Some patients may experience mild soreness or a bit of redness in the areas that were treated, but these issues should subside after a few days. In the targeted areas, patients typically see a 20-25% reduction of fat. Several clinical studies have shown that massaging the affected areas within three months of treatment promotes additional fat loss. Generally, results begin to be noticeable within one to two months after the procedure, and fat loss should continue for up to six months. Keep in mind that you should continue to eat healthily and exercise regularly after treatment to see the best possible results.
As with any procedure, our medical staff will work with you to understand your goals and discuss the best way to maintain the results you desire. Everyone has different problem areas. During your evaluation, you should discuss your lifestyle and expectations honestly so that we can determine the best course of action.
