The Differences Between a Dermatologist and an Aesthetician

If you want to keep your skin healthy and looking its best, you should schedule regular appointments with a medical professional. Both dermatologists and aestheticians can offer you high-quality care. Learn about the differences between these two specialists so that you can make informed decisions about your health.

What Certifications Do Dermatologists and Aestheticians Need?

Becoming a dermatologist takes extensive training. Aside from earning a medical degree, they have to complete a medical internship and residency to round out their education, which typically takes another four years. Once they’ve finished that, they have to pass an exam by the American Board of Dermatology to become board-certified. This level of rigor prepares them to diagnose and treat a wide range of skin-related diseases and issues.

The requirements for aestheticians vary in each state. In Louisiana, they must complete 1,500 hours of training in an approved program and pass an exam by the Louisiana Board of Cosmetology.

What Types of Conditions Can They Treat?

Dermatologists and aestheticians can treat numerous skin-related concerns. Dermatologists are typically more prepared to address issues like skin disorders, infections, and cancer. The same line of thinking applies if you’re seeking a biopsy or a procedure that involves surgery.

As their name suggests, aestheticians typically address aesthetic concerns. They can assist you with cosmetic issues that are related to aging and achieving a clearer, brighter complexion.

Which Practitioner Is Right for You?

Most dermatology practices, especially those that perform cosmetic and medical procedures, have both dermatologists and aestheticians. When you schedule an appointment, it will be booked with a medical provider whose expertise aligns with your symptoms or the procedure you’re interested in. If you’re concerned about skin cancer, you’ll see a dermatologist. If you’d like a skin rejuvenation procedure, such as microneedling, there’s a good chance you’ll see an aesthetician.
