Answers to Common Questions Kids Ask About Skin

As children grow and learn, it’s natural to have questions about their bodies. Many kids may wonder why certain parts of their appearance do not match their friends or even their family. Here’s how to explain common questions children may have about skin.

How Did I Get this Birthmark or Freckle?

Many children may be curious about certain markings on their skin that are unique to them, as young children often have pronounced freckles. Freckles are small pockets of melanin, which the body creates to protect itself from the sun. That’s why freckles may appear more after spending more time in the sun. People aren’t entirely sure why birthmarks are formed, but many people have them. If a birthmark bothers a child, dermatologists may be able to lighten or reduce it over time. However, freckles and birthmarks both tend to fade away as children get older.

Are Freckles and Moles the Same Thing?

Freckles are normally brown, flat, and in a circular pattern on the skin. But moles can come in different shapes and sizes. Unlike freckles, moles are a small area where the pigment has clumped together. Children can be born with moles, or they may develop them over time. Moles may be flat or raised in a small bump.

Why Did I Get a Sunburn or Turn Tan?

Life wouldn’t exist without the sun, but there is too much of a good thing! Sunburns are created when the skin is damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. UV rays may also result in suntans, which is when the skin produces more melanin to protect itself from the damaging rays. To prevent this damage, it’s best to regularly use sunscreen, which works by blocking UV rays that affect the DNA of skin.
